RESIST

Through Breakthrough RESIST, we amplify the voices of activists responding to—and most directly affected by—crucial gender, race, and equality issues, in real time.

When news breaks, they speak directly to our cameras, and we use our tech tools, digital media, and other platforms to make sure their calls to action are heard—individually, en masse, and at scale. This way, we expose audiences to a plurality of faces and voices and increase the power of marginalized perspectives to shift popular opinion.

#ProtectBlackWomen

Jacqueline Dixon, a young Black mother of four, was charged with murder after she shot and killed her husband while he was attacking her. On October 11, 2018, she was cleared of all charges by a grand jury. But we won't stop fighting for Black women like Jacqueline, who are so often punished just for surviving. Video made in collaboration with Color of Change. Special thank you to Patrisse Cullors, Eve Ewing, Kirsten West Savali, Darnell Moore, Treva Lindsay, and Aishah Shahidah Simmons.

Breakthrough: RESIST – Everyday ways to be in solidarity with transgender communities

So many people have been angry. And rightly so. The Trump administration's recent move to redefine "gender" as a means of erasing and invalidating transgender people and their experiences is horrifying. But we must also remember that resisting trans-antagonism requires everyday acts of solidarity with transgender people. But don't take it from us, listen, if you can, to Elle Hearns, Founder/Executive Director of the The Marsha P. Johnson Institute. In this video, she provides three tips on how we might better show up for trans communities.

Joseph Osmundson on the Caster Semenya Verdict | Breakthrough RESIST

On May 1, news broke that Caster Semenya, an Olympic gold medalist from South Africa, has been ordered to artificially lower her natural testosterone levels in order to continue competing in women's races. This unreasonable ruling sets a dangerous precedent for how women athletes, especially Black women and those who do not present as "traditionally feminine," will be unfairly scrutinized in professional sports. For Breakthrough RESIST, scientist and writer Joseph Osmundson breaks down why this ruling is based on faulty reasoning and cruel dehumanization

We can’t achieve immigration justice without gender justice, too

July 2, 2019

In recent weeks, we’ve faced an onslaught of stories about the human rights abuses being perpetrated at our southern border. Detention centers where children, forcibly separated from adult family members, lack access to soap, diapers, toys, even beds. Where adults, crammed behind wire fences, look out with hunted, haunted eyes. We shiver when, on social…

Anti-Abortion Misogyny: It’s Never About the Children

May 20, 2019

Last Thursday, while driving my fifteen-year-old daughter to school, she asked, “Mom, why do men hate women?” We had been discussing Alabama’s anti-abortion legislation, and she was keen to better understand why politicians would pass laws that criminalize girls and women. She was especially horrified that rape victims — some younger than she — could be…

Love is Our Most Radical Choice

February 14, 2019

Reimagining Love as a Political Force this Valentine’s Day What would our world be, if we chose love? It’s easy to dismiss Valentine’s Day. Its capitalist drive and its focus on monogamist, heterosexual romantic love can be tiresome and archaic. But the one thing that we can’t dismiss, now more than ever, is love. And…

Why the Trans Military Ban is on the Wrong Side of History

January 23, 2019

On Tuesday, January 22nd, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) upheld the Trump Administration’s ban on transgender people in the military. This means that any active-duty transgender personnel cannot serve openly as themselves once the ban is imposed. Those who have public disclosed their gender identities since the Obama-era injunctions will still be able to serve…
