Anti-Abortion Misogyny: It’s Never About the Children

Last Thursday, while driving my fifteen-year-old daughter to school, she asked, “Mom, why do men hate women?” We had been discussing Alabama’s anti-abortion legislation, and she was keen to better understand why politicians would pass laws that criminalize girls and women. She was especially horrified that rape victims — some younger than she — could be forced to carry a rapist’s baby to term.

I struggled to find the right answer. As a scholar of gender, health, and reproduction, there were many ways I might have responded. But I could not say, “Men don’t hate women.” Because it’s not true. The twenty-five white Republican men who voted for the Alabama Human Life Protection Act, which would punish doctors who perform abortions with up to 99 years in prison, surely must hate women. The penalties for abortion are far more severe than those for rapists.

So, I told my daughter about patriarchy and how anti-abortion legislation enables men to control women’s bodies. And that these bills are tied to some people’s fears about decreasing birth rates among white people. I shared that women on the margins — poor women, women of color, young women, rural women, rape victims — would be most negatively impacted by the legislation. That white girls and women with financial resources, like us, would be able to access abortion even if it became illegal, as such women did before Roe v. Wade. (But not without extreme risk).

As a sociologist and mother, I believe it is important to name misogyny, not just for my own teenage daughters, who must navigate a dangerous landscape in which they are sexualized and punished in equal measure, but more widely. Philosopher Kate Manne defines misogyny not only as hatred of women, but also about “controlling, policing, punishing, and exiling the ‘bad’ women who challenge male dominance.” I believe we do not use the term often enough, instead dancing around the many ways that girls and women are chronically disadvantaged and damaged in systems that benefit men. We shy away from naming men’s contempt for women, and for female bodies, that feeds harmful policies and practices, from obstetric violence to sexual assault to forced pregnancy and motherhood.

“I believe it is important to name misogyny, not just for my own teenage daughters, who must navigate a dangerous landscape in which they are sexualized and punished in equal measure.”

Since the 1980s, when I came of age intellectually, the Right has been particularly effective at controlling the discourse of abortion, which paints women as selfish, promiscuous cows who like nothing better than to pop in for an abortion, then grab a latte on the way home. Such discourse blossomed under Ronald Reagan and has become even more entrenched. In the maternal-fetal dyad, for conservatives, especially the Christian Right, there is just one viable person: the fetus. Women are dehumanized, treated merely as vessels for delivering new life. Only fetuses and corporations get to be people in this brave new world.

Conservatives have successfully deployed the term “pro-life” to cloak the underlying misogyny of anti-abortion legislation. We hear a great deal about their care for the fetus, but evidence shows that once a child is born, conservatives lose interest. States passing anti-abortion legislation have among the highest infant mortality rates in the country. In 2017, Alabama’s infant mortality rate was 7.4 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, twice that of Massachusetts, which had the fewest deaths.

Alabama and thirteen other states failed to expand Medicaid coverage, which is directly correlated to health disparities and outcomes. Numerous studies have shown that expansion reduces infant and maternal mortality, minimizes health disparities, and contributes to increased life expectancy. Failure to invest speeds sickness and death, especially for the most vulnerable. Georgia, whose governor recently signed a so-called “heartbeat bill,” ranks 46th among U.S. states for maternal mortality. Alabama ranks 49th for overall life expectancy.

In 2018, Alabama ranked sixth worst in the nation for poverty, with 16.9 percent of the population living below the poverty line. This, despite the fact that the national rate fell for the fifth consecutive year. Fifteen of Alabama’s 67 counties have a poverty rate greater than 25 percent. And while a quarter of the state’s children overall live in poor families, 44 percent of Black children live in poverty. U.S. News and World Report ranks Alabama dead last in the quality of public education.

It may be beneficial to be an embryo in Alabama, unless you are an embryo in an IFV clinic, but it can be deadly for a child outside the womb. The Annie E. Casey Foundation lists Alabama as the fifth worst state to be a child. Black children are even more at risk; Black babies die at three times the rateof white babies in Alabama. And with 23 documented hate groups, Alabama’s Black children (and their kin) are at risk of everyday harassment, violence, profiling, and premature death.

In signing Alabama’s law, Governor Kay Ivey said, “every life is a sacred gift from God.” She lied. She did not mean actual children, only the unborn. Nor did she mean women. There is little evidence in Alabama, or any of the anti-abortion states, that the lives of women and children are seen as “sacred” or even minimally valued. If they were, states would not allow pregnant women and babies to die prematurely from preventable causes. They would be investing resources to ensure that every child survives and thrives.

“There is little evidence in Alabama, or any of the anti-abortion states, that the lives of women and children are seen as ‘sacred’ or even minimally valued. If they were, states would not allow pregnant women and babies to die prematurely from preventable causes.”

Conservatives may well believe that embryos and fetuses are persons. But to claim that anti-abortion legislation is about children is deceitful. “Pro-life” is a magic trick that wraps disdain and revulsion for women’s bodies and lives inside a shiny silver box with pink and blue ribbon. Forced-birth legislation fails to protect children at all, while punishing women who abort — or even miscarry. But punishment is precisely the point, isn’t it? Because such legislation has never been about the children.

Let’s call anti-abortion legislation what it is: anti-woman, anti-mother, anti-child, and anti-freedom.

Thank you for writing this. I am going through a pregnancy at BYU where, if I’m found guilty of having become pregnant, I’m kicked out of the university for honor reasons, which is often seen by other universities unwilling to look into it as cheating in school, and therefore stops my education all together. The guy who got me pregnant threatens me everyday with my pregnancy to tell the BYU honor code about it and controls everything I do.

I used to have this fear that God would ruin my life if I choose an abortion. But I would rather not be responsible for ruining my own life, after applying to so many other universities and not getting in, to allow being pregnant to ruin me. Plus, with no money, the most I could do is borrow cash to get a midwife, and I have no way to give birth or have hospital care.

I wish everyone would read this.

Im so sorry you have to go through that. Its crazy how that is the situation for people in the USA (assuming you live there) 🙁

It’s been horrible. There have seriously been some “men” making fake social media accounts just to “say what’s really on (their) mind” and so many have said they’re going to r..pe women because they know they can get away with it now. Women will get criminalized for taking care of themselves after what a man will do to them but where’s the punishment for that man? I’m terrified. I don’t want to work night shifts anymore at my job because of the creeps who already follow me in the parking lots.

Everything I have read on this page is 100% truth. But I’m not scared, I’m enraged. Enraged at the people who signed anti-abortion legislation into law, but also at myself, and other women for being cowards and enabling men to continue to have and exert this power over our bodily autonomy. I feel like every time I even think about having sex, I contribute to enabling men to control my health. Why are women continuing to choose to have sex with the same men who believe they have the right to control our health decisions? If all women stopped having sex with men, literally today, this legislation would change VERY quickly. Throughout history, when a group of people is oppressed by another group, that oppression continues until the oppressed group fights back. The most effective means we have of fighting back is to prove to these men that they do NOT have the right to force women to live as incubators. If we don’t get to control our bodies, they don’t get to have sex with our bodies.

This is the thing I hate so much about the ” pro life” talking points. Some of us actually know that it takes a man impregnating a woman for her to become pregnant and we are so sick of hearing how the woman is ” solely responsible” as if men are just allowed to do whatever they want with absolutely no consequences to their own actions. I am so sorry that you are going through this and as a Christian woman it makes me so mad that religious institutions often show no mercy or compassion to the victims of rape and sexual assault while protecting the actual oppressors. Simply put some of us know that we are fortunate to have walked away from a potential rape or sexual assault without being impregnated by our perpetrator and the memory of the experience still haunts us I cannot even begin to imagine how it is to know that we are expected to carry a child that we did not at all choose to conceive to term. I have a daughter whose adolescence is right around the corner every day I fear for her safety because of ignorance like this.

To the folks who think it should be illegal for a woman to end a pregnancy: If it should be illegal for a woman to end a pregnancy, should it also be illegal for a man to ejaculate inside a woman unless they both wish to have a child?

Thank you for writing this. I am going through a pregnancy at a religious universitywhere, if I’m found guilty of having become pregnant, I’m kicked out for honor reasons. • Lela on August 15, 2020 at 9:28 pm

just argued with some male who said abortion is always more lethal even when you cannot give the birth in a hospital, are a rape victim, can potentially die etc. He said not only a fetus but a zygote is a literal human and no woman should be given more worth than it. Of course he still thought his life is more important than any number of zygotes and they should not be saved before him if such was the situation. Like in the trolley problem, if you replace the 5 people with 5 zygotes he would favor himself. Hypocrisy. So a zygote is only a equal human when he sees it beneficial to himself.

    • Dessie on September 4, 2021 at 4:45 am

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s inspiring and comforting to know there’s more women out there with the same views. I’m appalled that recently 2021 Texas (A republican state of course) has almost completely banned abortions and soon I feel like other states will follow. For years it’s always been about depriving women of their human rights because it’s a “men’s world”. Because deep down men truly do have a hatred for women who want their rights so they must keep us in check with these outrageous and disgusting laws against women. It’s not about the unborn babies it never is, it’s 10000% about keeping women from having choices and controlling us out of fear. I pray that hopefully one day women will be as powerful and whole as men are seen.

  3. Mandy on June 30, 2020 at 3:54 pm

I hear what your saying but I come from an experience in which I strongly feel that abortion is also a way in which a man controls a women’s body. Children rarely are seen as much a blessing to a life by fathers vs the mothers they create. A mother choosing to end the life a her flesh ends all possible hope for that child to add blessings of love, prosperity and strength to her own life and the lives of others in taking away their opportunity to live. A women will feel the consequence of that decision that in my opinion far out weighs the burden of carrying and raising a human to adulthood. It is a horribly difficult task to mother but if we repeatedly invest in right decisions to the best of our knowledge and ability those right decisions come back to bless us.

    • char on March 20, 2022 at 10:34 am

Mandy, great news, you never have to have an abortion if you don’t want too. Unless the men in this country change their minds. So relax

    • Andromeda on March 23, 2022 at 10:18 am

This is a few years late, but your response to this article is quite upsetting, especially coming from another woman. To you, I ask what about a woman who can’t afford to carry and raise a child? What about a woman who will lose her job if she is discovered to be pregnant? What about a girl whose body is not physically ready to give birth? What about a woman who just doesn’t like children?
A woman should not be put through the trauma of pregnancy, birth and motherhood against her wishes. It does not matter if she may regret her decision in the future, what matters is what the woman wants to do with her body. In saying that a woman who chooses to terminate her pregnancy will carry a burden that far outweighs the task of carrying and raising a child, you are saying that a woman’s fundamental purpose is to bear children. Women are not baby machines. Say it with me; WOMEN ARE NOT BABY MACHINES. It is not our duty to carry children, nor will we feel burdened if we choose not to carry to term for whatever reason, be it our living situation, finances, or just a general dislike for kids. We are people beyond our ability to give birth, and a child is never, ever more important than the woman who carries it. For some women, birth is a wonderful miracle that will bring them unimaginable joy, and for others, it could quite possibly kill them. This is why abortion must be accessible to all women, because as autonomous people, we have a fundamental right to choose what we do with our bodies.
Based on your name, I’m assuming you are also a woman, so I implore you; please unlearn this mindset that every woman’s purpose is to bear children. We are so much more than that, and we deserve the right to choose.

    • Rebecca Townsend on July 20, 2022 at 11:33 pm

Mandy – each person is responsible for his/her regrets. No one else gets to manage those regrets. Reversing Roe because there is a concern that later a woman or man may regret the choice she/he made is ludicrous.

    • Candace Casey on October 10, 2022 at 3:06 am

You might feel differently if that child was conceived through the act of rape, especially if you were that ten year old girl forced to carry a baby to term. You know that before the onset of menarche forcing a young girl to carry a child to term could literally kill her right ? And Even if it doesn’t kill her it is definitely going to damage her psyche and quite possibly ruin any prospects she has at a ” normal life”?

I powerfully feel that once women lose the ability to control our reproductive rights, it’s a slippery slope to losing everything our mothers and grandmothers fought for. While I myself wouldn’t get an abortion, my decision doesn’t impact another woman’s decision. Bro vise versus. I’m happy to see such a great positive argument back at these conservatives.

  7. Julie R. on September 14, 2021 at 11:28 am

Thank you so much for this, although it always seem that everytime I fight for the truth (in writing and through talking) there is always a mass of men who still slaims loudly that war on women doesn’t exist, and never existed.

There is something awfully wrong in thr men’s brains for them to have such god-complex and inflated egos, and clear lack of empathy.

There are some crazy women out there but they are greatly outnumbered by monster-men: and those monsters are in power……

Impossible to defend yourself as a woman without being called names and rididuled: when more often than not, we make sense and are logical.

    Maddening.

  8. Shamwow on October 20, 2021 at 10:28 pm

Discussing the issue of abortion with a current professor of mine while working on a paper about assessing and understanding human services she said something rather enlightening that I totally agree with, “why don’t we snip more of the males out there”? As I pondered this idea and she pointed out the fact that men unlike women can reproduce far more frequently. The average female is only going to have one perhaps two babies per nine months whereas the males can get multiple women pregnant within a day’s time. In a 24-hour period, a male can get approximately 24 women pregnant but in 24 hours but one female can only become pregnant once within that time frame. When you look at it this way men are responsible for the cause and need of abortions as well as unwanted pregnancies. Men could simply get vasectomies and prevent women from getting pregnant avoiding the whole situation of abortion or unwanted pregnancies. I vote for more action in way of forcing men’s reproduction choices and making men who have multiple children with multiple women get vasectomies. It’s time men started owning their part in this reproduction system.

    • D. Taylor on June 24, 2022 at 7:27 pm

I am a big proponent of male birth control, both condoms and vasectomy. I have used both, and my vasectomy was one of the best choices I ever made. It is minimally invasive, affordable, and a lot of guys can go back to work after a few days. I am the poster boy for explaining to the guys out there that it isn’t that bad and is very much worth it. Even if you didn’t have insurance, it’s still relatively affordable. My dad made my mom get a tubal ligation when she couldn’t have children anymore because he felt like he couldn’t take the time off work (it also has to do with the fact that he believes that if she died and he married another woman that he would want to father children with her so that he could have more children in the afterlife). So, yes, I agree with you. All the misogyny makes me really angry and I am making sure I talk regularly with my daughter about how to detect and deter when the misogyny occurs.

Men should be punished for getting women pregnant! How is that? Married and she doesn’t want to have sex tonight and he forces her and she becomes pregnant? The man gets punished. Women don’t get themselves pregnant so why are they getting blamed? It is the man who has the loaded gun, so to speak. I know many women who have more kids than they wanted because the man insisted on sex without protection.

  9. Rene on November 30, 2021 at 11:58 pm

Ya and anti vac people claim MY BODY MY CHOICE MY DECISION. However it doesn’t seem to apply to women. Abortion only affect the woman. Anti vaxers could kill others, even children.
If a boy/man has had sex that create child from and doesn’t help the mother, they should be forced to have a vasectomy along with child molesters and rapers
Are pro life advocates going to be willing to adopt all the babies

If men could give birth, abortion rights would be a non issue. This is not about women or children or God or even rabid misguided “Christianity.” It is about naked power.

      THIS THIS THIS!
As a black female I’m frackin sick of pro life hypocrites talking about “sanctity of life” when it’s anything but. Its about the sanctity of control. Insecure little men and their female cheer squads/enablers who can’t stand women who control their destinies . We are making our own money, our own way and our own lives. WE are deciding if and when we have kids when we want to have sex and who we have it with and they can’t stand it. So they employ/hide behind convenient little excuses like the bible.
If they really care about kids as a previous poster said “How many kids have they adopted? Minority kids? Kids with special needs Older kids? Plenty of kids right now already born with beating hearts that need championing.
I noticed that when it comes to people already born with fully formed beating hearts who are losing their lives(men and women on death row), the poor, the homeless these forced birthers are silent.
I’ve noticed the same deafening silence when it comes to those already born who’s hearts were stopped by an act of hate. Was Matthew Shepard’s life not sacred? How bout Armaud Arbery? Breonna Taylor’s? Hy Jun Grant’s? Delaina Ashley Yaun’s? Satwant Singh Kaleka’s?
Bring up these lives to “pro-lifers” and notice the deadening silence.

  11. Kira on January 25, 2022 at 2:07 pm

It genuinely makes me cry when men think they have a say in women’s bodies. People only care about the thing until it’s born and then they don’t care about it at all. Men think because they lasted 3 minutes that they get to decide wether the woman gets to potentially die during birth or live a life only having to care for people she wants. I’ve never understood why men were the more dominant seggs and why they get to decide when women get rights or why men get to choose what others do with themselves. just for one year it should switch so men have the children. like seahorses.

Forced birthers frequently say that they “love the mother.” This makes me want to puke! Case in point. In the early 60s a neighbor girl of ours got pregnant out-of-wedlock. She decided to carry the pregnancy. She was one of the lucky ones and later on in her life became a successful businesswoman, an antiques dealer. A few years ago I was at my cousin’s (15 years older than I), leafing through her newspaper. I noticed a familiar name (the girl above) and saw that she was sponsoring an antiques show. I made a casual remark, “She’s certainly come a long way.” My cousin just said, “Oh, she’s a whore.” I was surprised and said to myself, “So she’s a whore just because she had a child out of wedlock?” This is how holier-than-thou types felt back then, and still do. They don’t care about a child once it is born, only to make sure the girl/woman remains pregnant so they can sneer at and insult them (“Oh, you little whore!) I remember many years ago seeing the late, unlamented Rush Limbaugh on a morning talk show. The subject of abortion came up. Rush said that even if his wife was raped and became pregnant, there would be no abortion, (Yeah, sure–) Then, when Madonna had her daughter out -of-wedlock, Rush referred to this “innocent” child as “her {Madonna’s}” ba-a-a-stard.”–that’s exactly the way he said it, with sneering contempt). Now, I believe in abortion up to and including the ninth month, but once a baby is born I don’t refer to them with that ugly word. Rush exposed himself for what he really felt, and I am sure other forced birthers feel exactly the same way. “Love the mother?” Don’t make me laugh!

Why are there no consequences for rape, incest, human trafficking and child pornography? Where is the male responsibility? Only women seem to suffer any consequence of an unwanted pregnancy. Why aren’t male offenders castrated? I know. Because it’s a male’s world created and curated by men to serve men. All this has to change.

In reading the views of the author of this article; Monica J. Casper, Ph.D., a sociologist at the University of Arizona along with the comments of readers, collectively all of you reiterate my feelings about pro-life and anti-abortion legislation. It has never been about the children because none of these types of laws address or make provisions for ways to support the well-being of children who are born under these extenuating circumstances. Concurrently they overlook the welfare of the mother in terms of life-altering conditions that ultimately compromise her health or worse can kill her, hard to fathom the disingenuous use of the “pro-life” adjective…

  17. J Edwin on May 15, 2022 at 1:20 am

Forcing women into pregnancy is as Christian as storming the Capital is patriotic, one done while holding a cross, the other waving the flag and both political. The charged term “pro-life” is as political as it gets, misinformation such as “heartbeat” bills, “killing babies”, folks disregard almost two thousand years of precedent before Pius IX completely made up the dogma of life beginning at conception due to theological issues when at least half of humanity dies before sticking to mamma’s uterine wall. It’s funny how a male political candidate looking for votes poses the question of when life begins, to juice his ego as if nobody has pondered the question, that he has the answers. Of course, women are not the creators of life each and every month but in his egotistical mind, life begins only after male sperm get involved. When I was thinking of an answer, the first thing that came to mind was life starts when they’re out of diapers. In my mind, the political position is Pro-“men can knock-up as many women as they want with no accountability”. The quickest path to preventing unwanted pregnancies is to focus on the cause: men. Criminalize the men who create unwanted pregnancies. If forcing women through pregnancy is your sadistic punishment, force men to get a vasectomy too, “it takes two to tango”; as if, men initiate sex a solid 95 percent of the time. If it’s a religious thing, criminalize men for impregnating women outside the sacrament of marriage. In olden times, fornication was punishable by death or at least you’d get stoned. So here’s a situation where clearly God did not mean for it to happen yet the hypocrisy is that free will is the greatest gift from God and women can’t sit with Jesus to choose with Him, nor can they be judged only by Him or receive the sacrament of penance. No surprise that Holy Orders is reserved for only men.I just pray that if the state forces women into pregnancy and truly love these kids that they’d force the man into indentured servitude, give the kid free college tuition, healthcare, and a fair start. The kid didn’t choose this, the state did, how do they know the kid would have even chosen this situation when mamma could have just waited and they’d have been ensouled when she was ready?

  18. JEdwin on May 15, 2022 at 1:33 am

In vitro rights are at stake if the state improperly defines embryos as life. IVF doctors are truly advocates of life, families, ethics. Politicians should be required to pass a test on how baby-making works in the real world vs a make believe world.

  19. LA on May 21, 2022 at 2:03 pm

I will never get an abortion; I am too old now. I am not sure if I would when I was young. But know this…. I will always believe it is your right to make the decision. The man doesn’t carry it. He is the one who put it there but doesn’t make him the boss of our bodies. You women need to fight tooth and nail whenever they start to take your rights away. We got you this far. Don’t let them belittle you. Your life is more important. As far as being a female. We should be treated like a queen. We should use that against the Men. We are the ones that can make the babies. If we don’t want one we don’t. Women protect yourselves. That is the best way. There are more women than men in the world. We need more political lawyers to get us in congress. Fight for your rights!

  20. Heidi Heidi on June 24, 2022 at 8:14 pm

Banning women’s rights is nothing to with an unborn child. It’s about control. Men wouldn’t step up and care for the childern being born. Women need to really take control and use protection or even tell men to have sex with themselves. Also start giving these babies the women are forced to have to the fathers to raise. Maybe then men will start caring about woman’s rights. Men in government will not advocate for women rights. Women are taught not to be aggressive or stand up for their rights. Start teaching girls to do so and be an example for girls. Change the white men running everything paradigm

As a trans woman who can’t ever get pregnant I’ve always had a weird experience whenever this topic came up. Even before I was noticed, or seen as remotely feminine, my classmates in debate would walk on up to me and ask ME what my opinion on abortion is. I honestly didn’t have an opinion yet, because I didn’t understand enough about the process of pregnancy, but I’d heard a looot of things that were already making suspicious of the “prolife” movement. First thing I noticed was that there was always these over the top emotional grandstanding among that crowd, and a ton of insults for teenagers, women of any age, especially underage mothers, and a general scientific illiteracy that destroyed my ability to process logic entirely right.

There’s evidence to suggest fetus’s feel nothing until the 24-25th week anyways, and the vast majority of abortions are before that point. Of the 1% of abortions that are late term….most are traumatic situations where the mothers life is at risk, and for a fetus that will be dead on arrival to add insult to injury. Some men hate women so fucking much they’re willing to risk the life of them just for the CHANCE that a baby boy is born. It’s fucking indefensible. I’ve always been pro choice, and I have only gotten angrier and angrier the more I learn about pro life scum.

Honestly, I hate saying that as a feminist, however, I do think for most parts it‘s our own fault that things have come so far now that reproductive rights are under attack. A shocking number women are joining the anti choice movement and are even fighting on the front lines, preventing other women from make their own choice. Why is that? Would men join a feminist movement in such great numbers that would advocate for mandatory vasectomies? I don‘t think so! Women have always been great at harming themselves, or at least staying quiet when things like that happen. Why is there not more outrage? Why won‘t women not unite and lay don‘t all work for several days? Once a majority of women would do that, the economy would literally collapse and I‘m sure laws like the „heartbeat bill“ had to be revealed. Remember this, we WOULD have the power to change things, but for some reason we don‘t, and that makes me sick.

Just stay out of relationships. Women need men like a fish needs a bicycle. You can thank me in 40 years.

Why do women go along with this insanity?

If being pro-life is anti-woman, anti-mother, anti-child, and anti-freedom, why are millions of American women pro-life?

Because there are idiots who fall for stupid things all the time. Just look at the religious people of the world. Convinced that they are right and that their book of fables is truth. People like singling others out, even if the very cause they’re fighting for would take their own rights away. They’ve been convinced that they like it that way, and thus they fight to maintain that order, as well as trying to convince others to join them.

As a man who believes he comprehends what’s being communicated I would just like to say that the new “Pro-life” slogan should be: Shut up and have that baby! That’s really the level of insult we’re witnessing here. It’s all completely ridiculous and bereft of any adherence to a religious or moral value. I think women have every right to feel insulted.
